The American Gold Buffalo Mint State Coin was the first .9999 fine (24-karat) gold coin struck by the U.S. Mint, as a result of The Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005. The design of the coin came from the 1913 Type 1 Buffalo nickel, which was designed by James Earle Fraser. The obverse features a profile view of a Native American. The reverse shows an American buffalo or bison. This design is modeled after the famous buffalo, “Black Diamond,” who lived in New York City’s Central Park Zoo from the late 1890s to the early 1900s. Additionally the reverse design features the denomination and the weight of gold.
