Learn More About U.S. Roosevelt Dimes (1946-Present)

Ever wonder who is on the dime? The U.S. Roosevelt coin has been produced continuously since 1946 and bears the portrait of Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), the 32nd president of the United States who led the country through the Great Depression and World War II. Besides being a popular president and an effective leader, FDR was also an adult victim of polio who founded the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, which he later named the March of Dimes Foundation. All of these efforts contributed to his being honored on the 10-cent coin the year after his death in 1945. John Sinnock, the chief engraver of the U.S. Mint, was credited with designing Roosevelt’s left-facing bust for the dime. The reverse design elements include an olive branch, a torch, and an oak branch that symbolize peace, liberty, and strength, respectively. Today’s Roosevelt dimes are made from an alloy mixture of 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel.
