Long before Hawaii became the 50th U.S. state, the U.S. Mint produced a variety of coins for the kingdom, including the 1883 Kingdom of Hawaii Dime. This interesting coin features the portrait of King Kalākaua I. The reverse side of this coin features a laurel wreath encircling English words “ONE DIME,” as well as the Hawaiian translation “UMI KENETA.” The reverse also includes the Hawaiian motto, “UA MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO,” which means the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness. The production of Hawaiian coins during this era was evidence of the Hawaiian Kingdom’s attempts to exert their independence. All Hawaiian coins would eventually be replaced with regular U.S. currency.
