Kingdom of Hawaii Quarters (1883)

Kingdom of Hawaii Quarters (1883)

In the late 1800s, the U.S. Mint struck a variety of silver coins for the Kingdom of Hawaii. One of those coins was the 1883 Kingdom of Hawaii Quarter featuring the bust of King Kalākaua I. On the reverse side of this interesting coin, a crown sits atop a large shield. The Hawaiian motto, “UA MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO,” which means the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness, is also inscribed on the reverse. The Kingdom of Hawaii coins would eventually be replaced with regular U.S. currency.
